Module 1 – Mind Body Connection

In the Class: Mind Body Connection

Neurophysiological Fundaments –

Neural transmission is the basis of what we call perception and it is a bioelectrical phenomenon. Billions of neurons make up the human nervous system.  No matter what sensory input, as it various from pressure to temperature to sound to electromagnetic waves, they all ultimately transform into electrochemical waves, and then into electrochemical impulses as they are transmitted to the central nervous system.  The study of this miraculous transmission of energy is fundamental to experience; we do not perceive reality, but rather a neurological model of reality.  This is what forms the basis for what we call our model of the world.

Every sensory organ varies from one individual to another, each one of us perceives the world differently and we internalize our experiences differently.  However due to similarities in neurological mechanisms, we can have similar experiences.  These combined shared social and cultural experiences can be called, “shared realities‘.

Language is an example of a shared reality.

It is also true that there is no universal shared and accepted representation of experience.   There is no one model of the world that is accurate for everyone.  This accounts for the diversity found in human personality.

A central theme of our work – Identify patterns of behavior.  The bits and pieces of observable behavior provide insight of the process model of personality.
